That will include a slew of news surrounding digital cinematography cameras, recording devices, dailies systems and upgrades to postproduction tools. Some of the news has been preannounced and can be found here; more will be revealed as vendors fire up their trade show booths in Vegas.<\/p>\n<p>NAB goers can certainly expect to hear about the <strong>ARRI<\/strong><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><strong> Alexa<\/strong> \u2013 nearly 1,000 cameras are now out in the market \u2013 and a slew of post gear that will now offer <strong>ARRIRAW<\/strong> support.<\/p>\n<p>For example, <strong>Codex<\/strong> recently inked an agreement with ARRI to manufacture a Codex ARRIRAW recorder for use with ARRI\u2019s popular Alexa and D-21 cameras. The new recorder will be marketed both directly by Codex and through ARRI\u2019s reseller network.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 590px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.icgmagazine.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/images\/2-ALEXA_Codex_Onboard_recorder.jpg\" width=\"590\" height=\"441\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">ARRIRAW recorder on-board Alexa from Codex<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cAlexa and the Codex Onboard recording system have been used on significant feature films, TV series and high-end commercials during the past months and the feedback was extremely positive,\u201d said Stephan Schenk, general manager business unit camera &amp; DI systems at ARRI. \u201cWith the Codex ARRIRAW Onboard recorder and workflow tools, ARRI now can offer a technically and commercially attractive solution to its customers around the world through a single, locally established point of contact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another supplier to watch is <strong>Atomos<\/strong>, a young company that grabbed attention when it showed up at IBC 2010 with the<strong> Ninja<\/strong>. The portable touchscreen HD recorder, monitor and playback device captures video direct to Apple ProRes from any camera with an HDMI output onto removable 2.5-inch hard disks. It weighs roughly a pound, and lists for just $995.<\/p>\n<p>Two production runs of 1,000 Ninjas have already sold out, and a larger run is scheduled just after NAB, reported Atomos CEO Jeromy Young. \u201cWe expect to ship 10,000 units by summer,\u201d Young related.<\/p>\n<p>Atomos will extend its Apple ProRes recording options at NAB with the HD-SDI-equipped <strong>Samurai<\/strong>. This portable device records, monitors and instantly plays back ready-to-edit, lossless ProRes files. The system also uses removable 2.5-inch hard disks, and lists for $1,495.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 590px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.icgmagazine.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/images\/3-Ninja-Hero.jpg\" width=\"590\" height=\"474\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ninja ProRes Equipped Hero from Atomos<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On the NAB exhibition floor, <strong>SGO<\/strong> and <strong>Element Technica<\/strong> plan joint demonstrations of <strong>SGO\u2019s Mistika<\/strong> and <strong>Mistika Live<\/strong> in combination with Element Technica\u2019s rigs. The companies recently announced a technical collaboration that will integrate Element Technica\u2019s 3D rigs, through bi-directional metadata capability, with SGO\u2019s DI and Stereo 3D Mistika postproduction system, enabling live interaction. This system could handle almost any image resolution in 2D and 3D formats. Mistika Live is an on-set system designed to capture rig, lens and camera set-up data, along with geometry, exposure and color errors.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 590px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.icgmagazine.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/images\/4-SGO-Mistaka.jpg\" width=\"590\" height=\"443\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">SGO\/Mistaka Post-Production System<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>3D and workflow will be the key talking points for U.K.-based <strong>Quantel<\/strong>. Its <strong>iQ<\/strong> and <strong>Pablo<\/strong> products have already been used for their stereo capabilities on projects like <em>Avatar<\/em>, and the company will show new tools at NAB. These include <strong>GeoFix<\/strong>, an image analysis tool to automatically fix camera geometry differences; and <strong>Disparity Checker<\/strong>, designed to offer real-time measurement of stereo disparity. GeoFix and Disparity Checker will come standard on all products in Quantel\u2019s V5 software.\u00a0EQ, iQ and Pablo include ARRIRAW support for the Alexa and D21 cameras, as well as two-way native DNxHD file interchange and 16-channel audio i\/o.<\/p>\n<p>Quantel also will demonstrate its software-only <strong>Pablo PA<\/strong>, released in January. The \u201cassist station\u201d allows non-creative tasks to be handled outside the main suite. A software upgrade that will be shown at NAB will enable GPU-accelerated processing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DVS\u2019<\/strong> popular <strong>Clipster <\/strong>will also be shown with emphasis on workflow support for IMF and MXF AS-02, as well as RAW material from the ARRI Alexa. A new, integrated batchlist function was added to enable automat processing of DCI, IMF and other deliverables. For stereoscopic 3D,\u00a0the new <strong>STAN (stereoscopic analyzer) <\/strong>software for Clipster\u00a0was developed to analyze and corrects 3D material in real time.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 590px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.icgmagazine.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/images\/5-Clipster.jpg\" width=\"590\" height=\"393\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Clipster from DVS<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Another interesting new workflow product comes from <strong>DFT Digital Film Technology<\/strong>, which will introduce <strong>FLEXXITY<\/strong>, a software system with applications in various aspects of postproduction workflows, including dailies, archive and restoration, video playout and file mastering, as well as ingest, transfer and transcoding tasks. FLEXXITY Archive allows users to access archived image\/audio files from disk storage and ingest material from film scanners. FLEXXITY Playout converts DPX, QuickTime<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> and raw digital cinematography camera clips and generates a master for playout as video, DPX, and encoded file formats. FLEXXITY Dailies is a dailies app for on-set or post digital and film dailies.\u00a0 It handles DPX, R3D, ARRIRAW and QuickTime clips natively.\u00a0 Stereoscopic 3D support includes stereo color matching.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 590px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.icgmagazine.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/images\/6-FLEXXITYDailies3D.jpg\" width=\"590\" height=\"369\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">FLEXXITY Dailies System from DFT Digital Film Technology<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>YoYotta<\/strong> also is eyeing the dailies market with <strong>YoDailies <\/strong>software for the Mac, aimed at creating review reels. YoDailies is designed to connect to a scanner or hard drive, and to create and manage metadata. YoYotta also will show the latest version of its YoYo software for automating file-based data management. YoYo ingests from tape and film and imports file-based content including ARRIRAW, ProRes, R3D, DSLR Raw and H.264 formats. NAB visitors can see YoYo at the Cintel booth.<\/p>\n<p>Germany-based <strong>Pomfort<\/strong> extends its <strong>Silverstack SET Edition<\/strong> with data management for RED and H.264 cameras. Silverstack SET Edition is a software system for on-set media management, quality check and backup, tailored to the needs of digital film production workflows.<\/p>\n<p>During NAB, <strong>Sample Digital<\/strong> will demo its new <strong>dax|Mobile with iDailies<\/strong>, a subscription service exclusively for iPad<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, at the Renaissance Hotel.\u00a0The new iPad app is designed to run on a wireless or 3G network, and create a collaborative workflow with 24\/7 access to in-progress content.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEncrypted streaming and on-demand watermarking for video and scripts deliver all the security of our desktop applications,\u201d said Patrick Macdonald-King, CEO of Sample Digital.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of apps, expect to see at lot of them at NAB this year. <strong>Light Iron Digital<\/strong> will demo its iPad-based <strong>LiVE PLAY<\/strong><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> and mobile dailies applications at the RED booth. Light Iron\u2019s LiVE PLAY is billed by the company as \u201can automated and interactive playback system that enables users to monitor metadata-rich files \u2013 often directly from a camera \u2013 and simultaneously review takes and add comments on multiple iPads.\u201d The app can be purchased through iTunes<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>In its run-up to NAB, <strong>Autodesk<\/strong><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><strong> recently <\/strong>introduced a slew of new tools, including some with emphasis virtual production. \u201cVirtual moviemaking is at the top of everybody\u2019s minds right now,\u201d said Rob Hoffman, Autodesk senior product marketing manager. One aim of the new Autodesk tools is production efficiencies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMovie, video game and television audiences are demanding more sophisticated content, which is causing production complexity to outpace budgets,\u201d said Marc Petit, Autodesk senior vice president, media and entertainment. \u201cTo remain competitive, studios must improve production efficiency and maximize their creative capabilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Also in the NAB preview were new software versions of their 3ds Max<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, Maya<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, MotionBuilder<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, Mudbox<sup>\u2122<\/sup> and Softimage<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, Flame<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> Premium and Smoke<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> products, as well as new game middleware releases for Autodesk\u2019s Beast<sup>\u2122<\/sup>, Kynapse<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> and HumanIK<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>. While not part of its pre-NAB announcement, Autodesk said there would be a new version of its Lustre<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> color grading system this year.<\/p>\n<p>3D technology company <strong>The Bakery, <\/strong>based in France, will unveil an animation and VFX lighting and rendering system, <strong>Bakery Relight<\/strong><sup>\u2122<\/sup>, at NAB.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBakery Relight solves the many lighting and rendering bottlenecks found at nearly all studios,\u201d said company co-founder, CEO Erwan Maigret, whose credits include technical lead on <em>Shrek 2<\/em>,<em> Madagascar<\/em> and <em>Shrek the Third<\/em>. \u201cOur research tells us that companies that use Bakery Relight can improve turnaround times by up to 300 percent.\u201d Maigret added that Bakery Relight will support the lighters\u2019 and shaders\u2019 iterative process, with full resolution feedback \u201cwithin seconds.\u201d Designed for both stereoscopic 3D and 2D productions, Bakery Relight aims to provide 3D HD preview and \u201crapid 3D rendering of left and right eye views.\u201d It is also designed to be customizable in order to integrate with both off-the-shelf and proprietary software packages. It supports multiple artists working in single or multiple locations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tweak Software<\/strong>, makers of the RV image and sequence viewer for VFX and animation artists, will unveil <strong>RV SDI-PRO<\/strong> at NAB. The product adds Dual Link SDI output with embedded audio to Tweak\u2019s playback and review tool using Nvidia Quadro SDI hardware. RV SDI supports Linux and Windows and will be available for $4,999.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany leading shops use RV for dailies and theater reviews,\u201d said Tweak president Seth Rosenthal. \u201cOur users made it clear there\u2019s a demand for a dailies playback tool that combines stereo SDI output with RV\u2019s ease of use and flexibility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On the lighting side, the Vitec Group\u2019s Litepanels<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> will show its \u201cHD-friendly\u201d daylight-balanced LED lighting fixtures, including the new H2 Hi-Output LED fixtures. The new fixtures aim to \u201canswer the need for an LED fixture capable of throwing illumination over a 20-to-25 foot distance.\u201d The new H2 Hi-Output features 5600\u00b0K color balance, utilizing an array of 72 one-watt daylight LEDs that are focused to a 10\u00b0 angle.<\/p>\n<p>Also in the Central Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center, <strong>Innovision Optics<\/strong> debuts its <strong>Kamtrax vertical and horizontal camera slider<\/strong>. Aimed at added vertical travel production value through an easy to set up accessory, Kamtrax is designed to offer weightless and smooth vertical camera movement via sealed ball-bearing wheels running along an anodized stainless steel track. Kamtrax is available in 3- and 6-foot lengths. Both ends can be attached to various mounts. Camera packages weighing up to 40 pounds can be mounted on Kamtrax. To render the camera weightless, the same amount of weight in barbell disks are attached to the other side of the continuous cable.<\/p>\n<p>ICG\u2019s recent (March 2011) 3D issue also covered some early NAB product news. This included <strong>Sony<\/strong>, whose exhibit includes a collection of 3D capable switchers (including its <strong>MVS-8000X<\/strong> with more 3D functionality), 3D professional monitors, and new 3D processing and 2D\/3D conversion technologies. Sony also is expected to show its prototype professional shoulder-mount 3D camera, which was previewed under glass last year at IBC and more recently at CES. Sony says it will have two, half-inch CMOS sensors, and ESPN 3D is testing the camera. It is expected to ship toward the end of this year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Avid <\/strong>aims to offer increased control over 3D material straight from <strong>Media Composer<\/strong>, with new 3D tools in the timeline which will offer full resolution and real-time spatial adjustments of each eye within the 3D space. As the Media Composer software can run on a laptop, Avid suggests that the new tools could be an advantage to filmmakers who would do 3D editorial on location, or who might need on-set review and approval.<\/p>\n<p><strong>IRIDAS<\/strong> plans to unveil a new product aimed at the 3D stereo and on-set color grading\/color management space, using its <strong>DualStream NX technology<\/strong>. <strong>Cinedeck<\/strong> expects to show real-time 3D playback capabilities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis new development opens up opportunities to leverage multiple other new camera technologies for production crews looking to shoot and capture in 3D, but who may not be shooting with SI,\u201d the company said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Imagineer<\/strong> debuts a new version of <strong>mocha Pro<\/strong>, the company&#8217;s desktop VFX tool that combines planar tracking, rotoscoping, compositing, removal, lens distortion and stabilization. Applications include 2D-to-3D conversion workflows.<\/p>\n<p>Also as reported in our March issue, <strong>DSC Labs<\/strong> will feature its new <strong>Dashwood 3D Chart<\/strong>, a stereoscopic chart that automates the display of 3D rig calibration. When integrated with Dashwood Cinema Solutions&#8217; new calibration software or new Stereo3D Toolbox<sup>\u2122<\/sup> v3, the chart&#8217;s code trackers work alongside the applications to automatically track to 1\/1,000 of a pixel stereo alignment. The product includes feedback to assist in automating camera alignment, sync testing and slating, and color and gamma calibration. The Dashwood 3D Chart additionally supports manual alignment with the DSC Labs&#8217; patented FiddleHead spirals for corner-to-corner focus.<\/p>\n<p>DSC Labs also will unveil the <strong>3-DZ<\/strong>, a tool for the balance and alignment of 3D rigs.
