It seems like this would be a good time to talk about the role of this magazine in the big picture of the International Cinematographers Guild, and how it stands separate, somewhat, from the organization itself.
The International Cinematographers Guild as an organization is dedicated solely to the betterment of wages and working conditions of all camerapersons across the United States of America. It does that by negotiating collective bargaining agreements, enforcing those agreements, organizing non-union productions, and in general, trying to find new and creative ways to help the members of Local 600.
ICG Magazine, however, is more focused on the craft that we all work in. We provide information on new techniques, stories about those who are working in the field, and generally cutting edge updates that we all need to stay current in our craft.
We also try to use this publication to enhance the careers of our members. Whether we interview a cinematographer who has achieved a certain look that a producer will want on his or her next film, or whether we’re highlighting an assistant or still photographer that you may end up working with, our general purpose is to communicate openly about who is doing what in our craft.
Possibly the best way that we do this is through the production report in the back of every issue. As hard as we work to provide you with informative articles, we are painfully aware that the one section of this magazine that everybody reads without fail is the production credits.
We will continue to strive to improve the accuracy and breadth of the articles we bring you in this publication, because we believe it helps you to be more up-to-date, informed and employable. Which is after all, why we’re all here.
In closing, I would like to acknowledge that I have been elected to this office for another three-year term, so it looks like you’re stuck with these editorials for awhile. In all seriousness, I sought this office because of the passion that I feel towards the craft we practice, and the people who practice it. I am honored by the trust of those who voted for me, and I consider the diligent execution of my presidential duties to be the best possible way for me to show you all how deeply I care.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
